GPS Team Challenge
“Complete as many challenges as you can.”
The GPS Team Challenge event is a woodland teambuilding game. Teams race against the clock and each other, completing challenges together and scoring points. Your team will need to move quickly from station to station across a large wooded area, choosing where to go from a GPS map showing station locations.
“This is quite possibly our favourite activity in our programme.” – Youth Adventure Trust
“Where should we go next? How many points is it worth? Which is closest? Who’s in the lead?”
Each challenge has a set of instructions, accessed using your mobile device. When your team completes a challenge, you upload your photo evidence which increases your team score. You can see all team scores in the app in real-time, including your place on the leaderboard.
The Setup
Each Up to 5 groups of 6 participants can take part in any one game. Each game lasts for approximately 2 hours. Teams are given GPS enabled mobile devices which shows the locations of the challenges and challenge instructions. Once teams find a challenge, they read, understand and discuss the requirements then work together to complete it, uploading their evidence within the app. Points are automatically allocated for each upload, enabling teams to see their score and position in realtime.
Challenges
Each challenge is unique, requiring a different skill or ability to the last. Teams will need to balance, aim, be agile, take care, speak and listen effectively, stay alert, with keen eyesight and memory. Across all challenges, the common themes are collaboration, creative thinking, problem-solving, communication, consideration, inclusion, positivity, tenacity, enthusiasm, resilience, encouragement and good old competitiveness.
As well as completing challenges, teams will collect clues and codes to locate and unlock the treasure for a super point bonus.
The Play
When the whilst blows, using GPS devices, teams must choose their first challenge location to head to, then get to it as quickly as possible, navigating through the woodland. Once discovered, teams are supported and monitored through their challenge, then they upload photo evidence to score points, before locating a new challenge to find. Evidence is checked and points can be removed. Challenge scores change within the game to rebalance motivation. When the time is up, challenge uploads are locked and teams regroup for awards and debrief.
